2023 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Byrd, England’s finest composer before Purcell. The programme celebrates Byrd’s chamber music, including inventive fantasias in three to five parts, tuneful dances, and In nomines based on plainchant, alongside songs of joy and sadness: some celebrate Queen Elizabeth I while others mark the passing of his friends and patrons.
