Zemlinsky Trio

St Paul’s Hall, University of Huddersfield

Zemlinsky Clarinet Trio in D minor, Op 3
Rota Clarinet Trio
Frankel Clarinet Trio No 2, Op 41 ‘Pezzi pianissimi’
Ireland Clarinet Trio in D minor

We’re delighted to open our new season with a performance by the celebrated Zemlinsky Trio, who bring their renowned artistry to St Paul’s Hall for an evening of clarinet trios spanning over a century of musical history. The programme opens with the brooding, late-Romantic intensity of Zemlinsky’s own Trio in D minor (1896), moves through the vibrant colour and charm of Rota’s writing, into the wit and delicate shading of Frankel’s Pezzi pianissimi, before closing with the lyrical warmth of Ireland’s Trio in D minor.

Together these four works trace a fascinating musical journey — from fin-de-siècle Vienna to the concert halls of postwar Britain — each composer finding something different in this rich and rewarding combination of clarinet, cello and piano. As the opening concert of our society season, this is a wonderful chance to welcome back familiar faces and greet new members alike, with a programme full of contrast, character and genuine musical surprise.
